Using Nutrition to Treat Dyslexia

In Conference Calls, Healthy Eating by Clara0 Comments

Conference Call by Health Coach Loren Miller

Tonight we’re talking about dyslexia. For our particular gene pool there is a book written by author Abe Schmidt. He came out of a conservative Mennonite community in Canada and moved to Indiana. He later did his PHD work in Pennsylvania. Schmidt was a dyslexic individual and had to learn to deal with it and spent a lot of time researching. The name of his book is The Brilliant Idiot and has about the characteristics of dyslexic people. I relate to it because my test at Yale said I was the second most dyslexic person they had ever tested.

To deal with those issues I started researching the nutritional deficiencies.  I still maintain some of the basic habits, but have overcome the deficiency of learning and the deficit of social skills. I did that with primarily using the micro nutrient approach, which is advocated now officially this year by the CDC. The micro nutrient tests are a 14 day culture of the white blood cells, which are located inside the red blood cells of the blood. We call that Micro nutrient Lymphocyte Testing.

There were some common things we’ve been exposing to this kind of testing over the years. When I was working with the drug company we found consistency, such as the Omega three, six, and nines were always low, the B-vitamins were always low, and then there are certain Amino Acids that were really low. One of those amino acids was phenylalanine. When difficulty comes a dyslexic person feels impeded. They get very frustrated, sometimes to a rage. They can’t control it.

We found that enough B Vitamins and phenylalanine would calm the person down. Sometimes it would take two or three hours, sometimes 90 days to calm the person down to be able to start focusing. Part of the frustration with dyslexic people that non dyslexic people don’t realize is when you’re looking at a page to read a book, because of the lack of B-vitamins and A Vitamins that they needed and didn’t have in their development, and the lack of phenylalanine, the words and the lines kind of bleed together. To straighten it out, they go clear across the page and look at the end, kind of come back, and they kind of sort that out and are looking back and forth.

When I was able to have the phenylalanine, the B-vitamins, and enough A vitamins, I found that there was actually a space between the lines. Many dyslexic people experience this. There’s actually a space between the lines and they can see the word. It’s like those who need glasses if you take off your glasses and look at the page, it’s kind of blurred. Then you put your glasses back on and you can see the lines and the words, and the sentence becomes clear. That is really, really common with dyslexic people. I had tremendous difficulty, and other people I’ve worked with had tremendous difficulty reading and comprehending.

The comprehension is really poor. When they receive the nutrients, then they actually enjoy reading and doing research. Dyslexic people learn by association. This is happening not just to me, but a lot of other people. I remember going to the Dale Carnegie course and they taught you to memorize by association. There were people in there that I remember when we were in school, had gotten almost straight A’s or they got straight A’s. I was in the lower 8th of my class. Reading was a major problem. I couldn’t understand the sentences.

My brain couldn’t process and hold the thoughts long enough to read and understand a double negative or triple negative sentence. When that all separated, the frustration of reading just started leaving. The habits that I still have, or the dyslexic person has, is they still want to see the big picture, they want to know where they’re going. As you develop this physical skill to be able to see sentences and see the space between the sentences on a page, you relax and you read through it much easier. You don’t have to jump to the end of the sentence. For the last 10, 12 years, I’m 75 now, I don’t jump to the end of the sentence at all anymore. I just read it pretty much like everybody else. In reading out loud, I would get lost. Many dyslexic people get lost, they stop, and they stutter.

When you get enough B Vitamins and enough minerals to go along with it, and essential fatty acids, the three, six and nines you get to where you can read at a fairly fast rate without stuttering or getting lost. Now I don’t mind reading out loud. Actually, I enjoy it because I’m kind of surprised that I can do it as well as I can. One characteristic of Dyslexic people is they like a lot of consistency and don’t like constant interruptions to our schedule. I can eat pretty much the same thing every day. I’ve found all of the dyslexic people can pretty much eat the same thing, too. That’s boring to a lot of people. A dyslexic person needs a lot of exercise, more exercise than most people do. In our communities, according to Schmidt in the book the Brilliant Idiot, about 20 percent of us are dyslexic.

In that process we do fairly well in our culture because dyslexic people do really well with a lot of physical exercise and being outside. Much of our culture has that in their lifestyle or whatever work they’re doing. A lot of time dyslexia was just not recognized. In our school system over the years we have recognized dyslexic responses and so have Special Ed or learning classes where people will do quite well. One of the patients we have, this really severely dyslexic boy was kicked out of their school and then they went to two other schools designed for dyslexic people. Then we got involved, with another associate. The mother had to homeschool him, and he started school at 8:30 in the morning and get done at 4:30 in the afternoon.

With our 90 day program, in that case, the young boy could get his school work done from 8:30 to 10:30. That’s how much it changed. Now in other communities we’ve tried to same thing and found that diagnostics was poor. This doesn’t work well for the ADD and ADHD person, they need other supports. But for a dyslexic person, they get to where they can comprehend things extremely quick, extremely well. And they’re very organized in their thinking, but they have to learn by association. So I want to bring it back to the Dale Carnegie course. There were 37 people in the class and you had to build a story. I remember this guy by the name of Perkins and I remembered there was a diesel engine called the Perkins diesel and visualized him riding on this diesel engine. For each person you had to have some kind of a picture in your mind, so when you heard that, the memory immediately was triggered.

Two of the guys used to get almost straight A’s. They got 33 correct.  And I got 34 correct. All of a sudden I decided at that point in time, I had to always do things by association. Dyslexic persons learn by association and they can retrieve by association and also by interest. So their learning style is by interest and by association, it’s not rote memory. Often the class will not allow you the time to build that association, to remember everything, than when you go home you do chores or do something else then you forget it. So they struggle quite a bit.

We found one child would remember by association so they had the child walk on railroad ties. So physically they were doing something, but also they were memorizing and they could retrieve by association. Those people would do extremely well and they could get 90s on their test too, but they just have different learning styles. So the nutrition’s really important. Then the next thing is your learning style within your life is really important. And then being able to see clearly on a page is essential.

In our schools I’ve found the nutrition is not there. They can read the page but struggle to separate the lines and see the words and be able to read the sentence. For those who have used nutrition we’ve seen many students go from absolute failing to staying in the 90 some percent as far as getting their tests correct. It’s not the nutrition needed for ADD and ADHD, it’s completely different. There are some similarities but for the most part it’s very different. The other thing we did when we were researching this was using the Meda Tron foot bath. They would take these young children who would write a letter backwards or couldn’t form the letters in an acceptable way, and they would do a detox foot bath, and anywhere from four or five days up to 12 days, if I remember right, they could write those letters correctly.

So detoxification becomes extremely important. When you have low mineral content and low B-Vitamins and real low amino acid absorption, your cells don’t absorb the nutrients. They don’t have enough energy to absorb the nutrients and to get rid of the toxicity, or the nutrients that our cells are not using, and that interferes with their writing skills and reading. So those that had the foot bath and detox from inside the cell improved tremendously their skills and writing and also increase their ability to retrieve or to remember.

Some dyslexic people can retrieve things very well of things they know and some cannot. You can tell them something then ask a question about what you just talked about and they just look at you. They have it in their brain, but they cannot retrieve it. In that case, we found that the number one thing you had to do is get enough essential fatty acids. In Europe they’ve done a lot of research on this.

For years outside of Europe, you could not buy tuna fish oil. Tuna fish oil is four times more effective than the other Omega three oils in terms of getting everything connected and wired together in your brain so you can remember things. In the recent years it was allowed to go into Canada and in the real recent years, there’s a couple of American companies that are also international companies that were able to sell it internationally. Now we have permission to sell it in The United States. Europe had the fishing rights where the tuna were in the ocean and United States didn’t have any fishing rights. In Europe there are countries which absolutely require the mother and the child to have plenty tuna fish oil for brain development.

So my recommendation is if you have any dyslexia in your family at all, is get them on tuna oil. It is one of the most important things you can do, and if you use tuna fish oil rather than salmon oil, you can get enough absorbed. Sardine oil or anchovies or herring is one fourth as effective as tuna fish oil. So tuna fish oil is extremely important to have plenty of. The other thing that is really important is polysaccharides. The most effective ones come from sea vegetables, then also from mushrooms, and certain rice. These polysaccharides are really important for the immune system, and for the cell to cell communications so a person can learn to speak correctly and can retrieve. Dyslexic people, if you talk to them, when they’re older especially, they are saying one thing, but they are thinking something completely different. Getting that coordinated is a major problem. When you get enough tuna fish oil, that problem reduces very, very substantially and it’s worth the investment.

Dr. Wallach spends a lot of time on the plane and he’s tracked himself and he found even with all that radiation exposure he has been able to maintain his brain function. He takes about 20 grams a day of a combination of flax and tuna oil to maintain brain function.  I have noticed for myself this make a big difference. Youngevity has the tuna fish oil, flax seed oil, and Omega three, six and nine. In our micronutrient testing, we’re finding the combination that he has is getting the desired results. That means it shows in your lymphocytes that you have enough.

I don’t know of anybody else that mixes like that. There may be something recently, but for years, Dr. Wallach was the only one that had that combination. There’s a company out of Canada that has the tuna fish oil but they don’t have anything else with it. So you’d have to start combining for yourself the Omega threes. One thing about fish oil is if they come in bottles and at the top there’s an airspace, then it starts oxidization there. Within about six months it starts turning to transfats, according to the studies. Wallach has put the Tuna Oil in Gel capsules and put some essential lemon oil. You can break them open, chew, or swallow them or do whatever you want. Some people have to chew and some people swallow. He takes care of both.

I’d like to just give another analogy. People that are high in iron are almost always low and copper and zinc. Copper is a transporter. It’s like the bucket that you put the milk in when milking the cows and you can transport it to the house. Iron cannot do anything by itself without copper and zinc. Everybody I’ve seen that has high iron levels is missing a cofactor. The medical doctor looks at your current status and says you have hemochromatosis, so you need to start donating blood every two weeks to take care of that. He knows that most people are not going to take the effort to change their lifestyle and the Dr. doesn’t know what is missing because he’s in serum testing. He’s not in lymphocyte testing. He’s not doing mineral testing, and not doing genetic testing. Since he doesn’t have those three tools, he’s going to say there’s nothing you can do about it. However, we found that when you’re using enough selenium, zinc, copper, and vitamin E and then the B Vitamins along with it, that all comes back in line. It’s just balancing out and having all the co-factors then the iron levels go down where they need to go and then they stay there.

We’ve see a lot of psoriasis and all those people are short in zinc, but you’ll be told it’s genetic. In one sense it is, the genes don’t get fully developed and they cannot do their work. There is a dividing line where nutritionally you can correct that and nutritionally you cannot correct certain things. What they’re saying now there are 900 diseases and 97 percent of the time these conditions can be eliminated, reduced, or you can increase the quality of life very substantially.

In our workbook we are listing all the ingredients so you’ll get information on Vitamin A, each one of the Vitamin B’s, etc. That’s going to become real important for you to select to address the issues in your family line. Sometimes people get confused with all the different supplements that are out there. One family, with the first four children, were using a supplement company that was very well known. The first four children just really struggle in life. With the next child they had started on our program and he does pretty well. Then the next three children, they don’t have any problems. So there’s a lot of confusion out there. What do I really use? What is the real science and who has done studies and who can legally make these claims?

Dr. Wallach sued the FDA so he could make these claims. He’s been to court and won all nine times because the science is there. The reason he did is so he doesn’t have to be worried about being shut down. They won the court case and now he can say what the science says as the truth. In this situation we can legally start talking about this. We’re trying to get the news out so people are not deceived by a wonderful presentation and then you have a family that needs to spend thousands of dollars a month trying to keep the children going. That’s really tragic. We’re going to do our little part to try to help people make better decisions.

Anytime you have a skin problem, you have a bowel problem.  We have an absorption recipe and certain ingredients you start out with and go from there. That’s all in the book. There are recipes of different food selections you can have because we found out scientifically if you include the supplement along with the food, you do a lot better. One study on just one ingredient ~ the one from the supplement did almost nothing. Adding the correct food increases natural killer cells by 30 percent when you had the supplement and the food. You’ve improved your immune system by 70 percent, so we have the foods listed in there that you combine with the food supplementation to make it all work better.

We will help you make wiser choices and addressing specific conditions and the reason we use conditions, this is a nutritional deficiency condition. Since 1999 we’ve been working on this and we’re finally releasing the book, but we really had to go get the people that take the supplements. We had to use this micronutrient testing and then we’d have to track it and make sure it got where it needed to go.
